The Autonomous Systems Laboratory (ASL) is housed in a newly renovated 3,439 sq. ft. facility on the UT Knoxville campus, designed to support cutting-edge research in autonomous systems, control, and optimization. At the center of the lab is a dedicated netted drone flight arena, which enables safe and controlled testing of a wide range of aerial missions. The flight area is equipped with overhead high-speed cameras for precise motion capture and data acquisition. Experimental data are transmitted via high-speed wired connections to a centralized ground station for real-time monitoring and analysis. The laboratory also features a high-performance machine learning workstation that supports development and testing of advanced AI/ML models for autonomous flight operations. In addition to hardware- and software-in-the-loop testing capabilities, the facility provides workspace for more than 10 full-time researchers, along with a variety of drone platforms for experimental validation. Designed as a versatile research environment, the lab supports simulation, visualization, experimentation, and system demonstration across a broad range of applications. It also serves as a hub for education, professional training, and outreach activities. Moreover, the drone testing platforms can be extended and adapted to support experimental studies in space-related technologies, enabling cross-domain research between aerial and space systems.
